The ultra-hip space in Downtown LA, Cafe Metropol, got a special license to host this special concert! It's an intimate setting with a lovely grand piano and moon guitar in my hands.

Prepurchase tickets here:
http://www.inticketing.com/events/39356/Jen-Shyu (one tree planted per ticket bought!)

A solo CD Release performance by New York City-based experimental vocalist/composer/pianist/dancer Jen Shyu, whose original music and dance paint the throbbing landscape of Chinese labor narratives from 19th century colonial Cuba and other stories in the form of ritual invocation and song in various tongues, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Taiwanese, Mandarin. She will accompany her singing with piano and the rare, two-stringed moon lute, an authentic Taiwanese instrument she learned from elders in the village of Hengchun, Taiwan. Of her new CD, David Adler of Time Out NY writes: “...the music tests the formidable talents of players like altoist David Binney, trumpeter Shane Endsley and drummer Dan Weiss. Shyu matches their virtuosity and sings with palpable nerve, her enunciation of Chinese an outflow of unpredictable timbres... It’s a remarkable achievement, with rich theatrical implications for the concert setting.”

West Coast Premiere of "Ghosted" in SF

Date: Sunday, June 21, 2009
Time: 9:15 PM
Location: Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St, San Francisco, CA

Go to the Frameline webpage for more info:
http://www.frameline.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=1722&FID=45

Germany, 2009, 89 Minute Running Time
Additional Countries: Taiwan
Language: German, English & Mandarin English subtitles
DIRECTOR: Monkia Treut

In the Taiwanese tradition, women have the unique power to return to the living as ghosts and punish us for our transgressions. While this sounds like the making of a horror film, German indie maven Monika Treut (The Virgin Machine Frameline9, Gendernauts Frameline23) instead presents the situation in more delicate terms; treating the weight of mortality with the same intensity as the weight of romantic betrayal. This German/ Taiwanese co-production features Treut’s recent interest in Taiwanese culture, and her now-trademark exploration of gender and cultural identities.

Hoping to seek out her biological father, the statuesque and genteel Ai-Ling convinces her mother to let her visit her uncle in Germany, where she falls for video-artist Sophie, a self-possessed professional. But, overcome by the artistic energy inspired by Ai-Ling, Sophie grows increasingly absorbed by her work and neglectful of her lover.

Five months later, Ai-Ling has suddenly and mysteriously died, and Sophie’s video projects have reached Tai-Pei, where a pushy but beautiful journalist, Mei-li, convinces Sophie to tell her story.Infiltrating Sophie’s life, the journalist discovers the lesbian drama, and Sophie slowly falls for this replacement for her lost muse.

As much a romance of cultures as an affair between women and memories, Ghosted is a sensual mindgame that asks questions in the sultriest way possible. Jetting between Taiwan and Germany, this movie may actually make you feel the changing atmospheres. — SARA SCHIERON

Taiwanese American Youth Leadership Camp in the SF Bay Area

Dates: June 18-21, 2009
Location: Headland Institute, Marin County
Fee: $280

Taiwanese American Youth Leadership (TAYL) is an annual summer camp held in the Bay Area that focuses on developing and strengthening middle school and high school kids' leadership styles and their ties to the Taiwanese American community.

TAYL is a 4-day 3-night camp of bonding, learning, and most of all, delving into what it means to be a Taiwanese American kid! Campers ranging from 6th to 12th grades participate in activities that are geared towards self-learning and growing up through the guidance of their peers and counselors.

Our counselors and advisors consist of college students and young professionals, who know and understand the lifestyle of a 2nd generation Taiwanese American in today's schools. Because of this, our focus on leadership is a lot more discussion and activity based than more traditional leadership training. In other words, we understand the importance of "keeping it real"

The week usually consists of 3 or 4 workshops, where we explore the different themes of what it means to be a Taiwanese American Leader such as: self identity, critical thinking, team building, decision making, and recognizing goals. We encourage our campers to examine what their definition of being Taiwanese American is, and the impacts that they could make on our communities.

Come embark on our journey with us, while we explore our Taiwanese American Leadership skills in a fun-filled weekend!

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Visit http://www.tayl.org to download the registration forms.
