Congressman Sherrod Brown To Speak on Defending Taiwan's Democracy

Co-sponsored by the North American Taiwanese Medical Association, Formosa Association of Public Affairs and the Taiwan Center Foundation of Southern California.

Ohio Congressman Sherrod Brown will be speaking at the Taiwan Center in Los Angeles on May 15 at 7:00 p.m. The Taiwan Center is located at 3001 Walnut Grove Avenue, Rosemead, CA. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Brown's speech is titled, "Defending Democracy — A Case for Taiwan."

Brown (D-OH) is a co-founder of the Congressional Taiwan caucus and senior member of the International Relations Committee. He is a leading voice in Congress on issues important to Taiwan, including the effort to preserve Taiwan's democracy and secure observer status for Taiwan at the World Health Organization's annual summit.

Brown has avidly denounced China's "Anti-Secession" law and recently introduced legislation that called for the lifting of any restrictions of high-level exchanges between Taiwanese and U.S. officials. He has also called for the United States to "actively assist Taiwan in exercising its universal right of self-determination by recognizing Taiwan's independent status and by pressing for its admission into various international organizations as a full participant."

After spending 12 years in the House of Representatives, Brown is running for Senate seeking to become the first Democratic Senator from the state of Ohio since John Glenn retired in 1998. Brown is running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH). With Ohio still an important battleground state, the race will be one of this year's most-watched campaigns.

Anita Chang, a Bay Area filmmaker who has worked as a resident artist and Fulbright lecturer in Taiwan tracing the reverberations of the island's rapid economic ascension and cultural discontents, is guest curator of tonight's series. Chen Chieh-Jen's Factory, Hou Chi-jan's Stardust 15749001, and Nana Wu's Farewell 1999 are included in tonight's program.

May 5 - 8:00pm
May 6 - 2:00pm & 8:00pm

The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage
2750 Granville St., Vancouver, BC

Join Broadway Performer/Playwright Welly Yang, Dina Morishita, and friends in a Night of Musical Theatre!

In a musical journey about finding home, Yang explores three generations of family history: stories of leaving home and finding home, of love lost and love found, and of dreams deferred and dreams realized. The show artfully weaves together seventeen Broadway classics and contemporary songs by Elton John, Tim Rice, Dan Hill and Alan Menken among others.

Although Welly Yang's deeply personal story "FINDING HOME" is the story of one family, it also parallels the stories of a generation of families who immigrated to America and struggled to make a home and future for themselves and their children.
