Hou Hsiao Hsien's THREE TIMES

In this cinematic tone poem, critically acclaimed director Hou Hsiao-Hsien takes us through three generations of Taiwanese memory and history. THREE TIMES features the same male and female lead playing three different sets of lovers defining different eras: 1911 as Time for Freedom, 1966 as Time for Love, and 2005 as Time for Youth. The film is photographed with such visual beauty that you almost feel like holding your breath so as not to disturb it.

Mon. Oct 16, 2006, 8:00pm, Harrah's Theatre

CO-PRESENTED BY:
Taiwanese American Chamber of Commerce
Taiwanese American Community Center

“Hou Hsiao-hsien, from Taiwan, and this will probably be the first of his 17 films you've seen. 'The movie distribution system of North America is devoted to maintaining a wall between you and Hou Hsiao-hsien,' I wrote after seeing this film at Cannes 2005. Here is a factoid from IMDb.com: 'Of the 10 films that Hou Hsiao-hsien directed between 1980 and 1989, seven received best film or best director awards from prestigious international film festivals. In a 1988 worldwide critics' poll, Hou was championed as one of the three directors most crucial to the future of cinema.'”
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Suntimes.

SIDENOTE for SF Bay Area Community: Three Times is also playing at Stanford on October 1st, 3:15pm as part of the 2006 Taiwan Film Festival.
