TAP/YGAP 2007 Taiwan Lantern Festival in LA

Date: Saturday, February 24, 4:00pm to 9:00pm
Location: Los Angeles Cultural Center, 9443 Telstar Ave, El Monte, CA 91731
Cost: Free!

The Lantern Festival takes place on the fifteenth day of the first moon and is the start of a series of springtime celebrations. This holiday is widely celebrated by families all around Taiwan and China. On the night of the festival, children carry decorative lanterns depicting birds, historical figures, and any other theme. At this time of the year, decorative lanterns also adorn temples and streets.

The community in the greater Los Angeles area will have an opportunity to see these large-scale, creative, stunning lantern sets! These lantern sets depicts folk tales, historic figures, and others. It will be a sight you won’t want to miss!

We plan to attend the first night of the exhibition in L.A. County on 2/24 and observe the lighting ceremony together. YGAP and TAP officers will meet you at the parking lot entrance at 4pm. The lighting ceremony is from 5:00pm to 5:30pm

Voices Gone Wild - Semiscon from Taiwan

In partnership with the Ford Amphitheater of Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Taiwan Center of Los Angeles and Taiwanese United Fund will produce an amazing singing group from Taiwan called Semiscon on May 19, 2007. Semiscon is an A Cappella group (singing without accompanists) that won several top prizes internationally and toured more than 25 cities across the world.

This short-term paid internship provides an excellent opportunity for students (or recent grads) to have valuable hands-on experience working under professional guidance. Interns are expected to work for three months (12-15 flexible hours between March and May) and the stipend is $600 each.

Deadline: Feb 22, 2007. For more information, e-mail semiscon_ford@yahoo.com

SF Bay Area 2007 Taiwanese American Lunar New Year Celebration

Just a little preview of the next Taiwanese American event that I'm organizing here in the Bay area... That would be a good weekend to come out and visit, my friends. Some of the "celebrity" panel speakers that have told me they will come include Karen Lin, film maker and music video producer (perhaps giving us a sneak peek of the premiere of her next project to be shown at the San Francisco Asian American International Film Festival) and Tyson Mao, Rubik's cube record-holder and star of the TV reality show Beauty and the Geek, Season 2 (who might just have to do a blind solve of the cube for us live at the event).

I'll keep hush for now on the other potential panelists...

Anyways, click on the image below to see event details. For the first 25 people to RSVP and purchase a ticket online before the official invite goes out, TaiwaneseAmerican.org will subsidize 20% off the regular lunch ticket cost. We Taiwanese Americans like good deals, don't we?
