Film: "Flight of the Red Balloon" at the SFIAAFF

The San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival is the premiere event of its kind in the nation! Come watch a film by famed Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien!

Showings:
March 16 5:00pm at the Sundance Kabuki Theatre in Japantown San Francisco
March 22 8:40pm at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, CA. *See below

In French with English subtitles
Directed By: Hou Hsiao-hsien
Producers: Francois Margolin, Kristina Larsen
Cast: Juliette Binoche, Song Fang, Simon Iteanu, Hippolyte Girardot
More film info: www.ifcfilms.com/viewFilm.htm?filmId=557

Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien (City of Sadness; Millennium Mambo) abandons his usual Taiwanese settings for a modern-day look at the City of Light in this lovely, ephemeral and at times experimental update of a classic 1959 French children’s short. Trading in the sweeping historical epics and flashy costume dramas of prior festival hits like Flowers of Shanghai and The Puppetmaster, Hou instead continues the obsessions of his more recent Café Lumiere, tracking the rhythms of life—and the rhythms of light—in the contemporary world to beautiful, dazzling effect.

*Join friends of TaiwaneseAmerican.org at the Saturday March 22nd showing in Berkeley, CA.

Yang's first major success "Taipei Story," gained world-wide attention in 1985. He followed that success with several other award winning films. Known for focusing on modern Taiwanese life and realistic problems, Yang's films have won numerous awards and are said to have a distinctive visual and narrative style. Critics praise Yang's films for their subtlety and minimal, yet powerful, dialogue.

"Made In LA" Screenings in SF and LA

MADE IN L.A. follows the remarkable journey of three Latina immigrants working in L.A.'s garment factories and their struggle for self-empowerment as they wage a three-year battle to bring a major clothing retailer to the negotiating table. Through this intimate portrait, MADE IN L.A. offers a rare and poignant glimpse into this "other" California, where immigrants in many industries toil long hours for sub-minimum wages, fighting for an opportunity in a new country.

Taiwanese American activist Joann Lo who serves as co-executive director of Enlace, a strategic alliance of low-wage workers centers and unions in the U.S. and in Mexico, is featured in the documentary. Over the past 10 years, Joann has also been an organizer in two different unions, serving Latina and Chinese garment workers in Los Angeles. She also currently serves as one of the co-organizers of NATWA II and was recently a special guest panelist for TaiwaneseAmerican.org's Lunar New Year Speaker panel!
