JOYFUL LIFE (LE SHENG)

Lo-Sheng (“Joyful Life”) leprosy colony was established in 1930 on the Sinjuang hillside in the outskirts of Taipei, Taiwan’s capital. In 2002, more than one-third of Lo-Sheng was destroyed due to subway construction and other pending urban development projects. As a result, more than half of the 300 remaining residents moved into the newly constructed hospital nearby. Due to resident, student, and human rights activism, plans for total destruction have stopped. At this point, the sanatorium remains despite continued pressures from the government, private interests, and local civilians to evacuate. Conceived as a collaboration among the residents of Lo-Sheng, a Taiwanese-American filmmaker, documentary students, and cultural workers, filmmaker-lead workshops prepared residents for their own storytelling and filming, creating an intimate portrait of a historically marginalized community and their inspiring determination to protect what they call their home.

Golden Gate Bridge Walk for Taiwan Inclusion in the WHO

Did you know Taiwan is not a member of the World Health Organization (WHO)?

The fundamental human rights of twenty-three million Taiwanese citizens have been ignored and denied for decades due to pressure exerted by the People’s Republic of China.

The Taiwanese Collegiate Alumni Association of Northern California and Taiwanese Americans in the Bay Area would like to use this activity to appeal to the international society and the mainstream media for this human rights issue, to recognize Taiwan's contributions to the world, to voice their concerns, and to support Taiwan's inclusion in the WHO and other international organizations.

Buses have been arranged from two locations from the San Jose and South Bay areas, leaving at 8 am. For more info, contact: Ms. Pan 潘秀蘭 (408)257-2266

To join directly at the Golden Gate Bridge, meet at about 10 am at the gift shop parking lots just south of the Bridge.

Wear your Taiwan Pride gear!
