Five feature films and four documentaries will be screened at the festival, which will kick off with an opening reception on Friday, continue with a panel discussion on Saturday, and conclude with a formal closing ceremony on Sunday.

TUF has been hard at work for over a year now, searching, screening and planning, in order to present a broad and representative selection of films exemplifying the best of contemporary Taiwan cinema. All of the selected films have won prestigious awards in other film festivals, and many of them will have their U.S. premiere at this film festival. In addition, the directors of some of the selected films, including Wei Te-Sheng, acclaimed debut director of the all-time best selling Taiwanese film, Cape No. 7, will appear in person during the festival to meet with the audience and discuss their films.

For more information, including schedule and ticket purchasing, visit the TUF website: http://tufusa.org/news/news.htm

Weekly Taiwanese Language Class, Walnut Creek, CA

The East Bay Taiwanese Association holds weekly informal Taiwanese language classes for beginner and intermediate levels. Hung-mao Tien, Taiwan's former Foreign Minister and representative at the Court of St. James, has written and edited extensively on China and Taiwan, including such works as "Government and Politics in Kuomintang China, 1927-1937," "China Under Jiang Zhemin," "Mainland China, Taiwan, and US Policy," and Consolidating Third Wave Democracies."

See website for details: click HERE.
UC Berkeley map: click HERE.

Protest Rally at Chinese Consulate in San Francisco

*Please note: TaiwaneseAmerican.org takes no official stance with regards to this issue. The information below is from a press release to the general community.*

Date: Saturday, November 1, 2008
Time: 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: Geary Blvd. and Laguna Street, San Francisco

On November 1, Bay Area Taiwanese Americans will rally at the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco to protest Beijing official Chen Yunlin's November 3 visit to Taiwan. Chen is the current chairman of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), the PRC organization responsible for relations with the Republic of China, or Taiwan. The cross-strait talks are expected to touch on direct flights between the two countries, as well as economic trades between the two countries.

The local rally will be held in support of the massive march that took place in central Taipei on October 25th. An estimated half a million Taiwanese participated in the Taipei protest.

"We Taiwanese Americans denounce any policies that threaten Taiwan's sovereignty and national security, and put the 23 million people in Taiwan at risk," says Dr. Pam Tsai, President of Taiwanese American Federation of Northern California. Tsai states that current Taiwan President Ma Ying-Jeou's policies will be "harmful" to Taiwan's right to self-determination and that signing the "Closer Economic Partner Agreement"(CEPA) with China "implicitly acknowledges that Taiwan is a second Hong-Kong and part of China."

Taiwan's status is contested by China, who has claimed the island since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. In the 1970s, the US switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing, under the premise of "One China." Many in Taiwan, with its independent language, culture, history and government, seek world recognition as a separate, independent nation. Saturday's rally is part of that movement.

The rally will take place Saturday, November 1, from noon to two in front of the Chinese Consulate on Geary Boulevard.

---
Taiwanese American Federation of Northern California (TAFNC) was founded in 1973 with the mission to promote Taiwanese and American cultural exchange. Through a spirit of peace and harmony, our organization hopes to establish an informed and involved Taiwanese community that interacts and co-exists with other diverse groups in California. Eight major Northern California Taiwanese American groups make up TAFNC.

NATMA 2G - SF / Bay Area Dinner

Are you a Taiwanese American medical or health professional?

NATMA 2G would like to invite you to meet up for fine dinner and conversation at Cafe Pro Bono in Palo Alto!

Time: 6:45 pm
Location: Cafe Pro Bono, 2437 Birch Street, Palo Alto, CA

Please feel free to invite friends and networks, especially if they're somewhat related to a medical / health professional field. He passed away at the age of fifty-nine in 2007, seven years after receiving his first-ever full U.S. release for what has tragically become his final film: the roundly praised and awarded Yi Yi. A leading member of the Taiwanese New Wave alongside Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Yang set his seven features amid the bustle of Taipei's ever-changing landscapes, both physical and psychological. The doubt evident in Yang's statement that "Every citizen in Taiwan has to face a question: what are we going to do in the future-reunification or independence?" reverberates throughout his human-scale epics."

Screenings:
October 11, 7:30 PM: Taipei Story (Qingmei Zhuma)
October 18, 7:30 PM A Brighter Summer Day (Gulingjie Shaonian Sharen Shijian)
October 25, 7:30 PM Yi Yi

For more information, click HERE for the LACMA website.

Ticket Prices:
$10 general admission.
$7 museum members, seniors (62+), students with valid ID.
$5 second film only of a double-feature; no advance purchase.

Diana Li Performance at Borders in the OC

One of the most promising Taiwanese American singer-songwriters out there, Diana Li, is performing at Borders Bookstore in southern California. Mr. Hyphen gives us a chance to celebrate the men of the Asian American community who devote their efforts to worthy community organizations — and to have a lot of fun while we do it.

Giving the underrated Asian male his due celebration, Hyphen will invite contestants from Asian American nonprofits all over the country. Contestants will strut their stuff in fashion, talent, and a rousing Q&A — all in the name of winning a donation to their chosen 501(c)3 organization.
